According to the WHO COVID-19 Dashboard, during the 28-day period from 20 April to 17 May 2026, 62 countries across four WHO regions reported new COVID-19 cases, with a total of 11,560 new cases. During the same period, 33 countries across three WHO regions reported 383 new COVID-19 deaths. WHO notes that reported cases and deaths do not accurately represent the true burden of infection and mortality because many countries have reduced testing and reporting or integrated COVID-19 surveillance into broader respiratory virus monitoring systems. In WHO’s Global Respiratory Virus Activity Weekly Update No. 575, SARS-CoV-2 activity was described as low globally, while influenza detections and RSV positivity also remained low overall. COVID-19 and other respiratory viruses therefore remain under active global surveillance, despite relatively low reported activity.
