The Ebola / Marburg intelligence category is currently driven by the active Ebola Bundibugyo outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda. As of 4 June 2026, the Democratic Republic of the Congo reported 363 confirmed Ebola cases and 62 deaths since the outbreak was declared on 15 May. The outbreak has expanded across multiple health zones, including affected areas in Ituri, North Kivu and South Kivu. Uganda has also reported 15 confirmed cases and one death linked to the same regional Ebola Bundibugyo event. The current outbreak involves Bundibugyo ebolavirus, a species of Ebola virus for which no licensed vaccine or specific approved therapeutic is currently available. Public health response therefore depends heavily on early detection, isolation, contact tracing, safe burial practices, infection prevention and supportive care. Marburg virus is included in this category because it is a related filovirus, but it is not counted as an active outbreak in this snapshot. Ethiopia’s first Marburg virus disease outbreak was declared over by WHO on 26 January 2026 after two full incubation periods without a new confirmed case. That event recorded 19 total cases, including 14 confirmed cases and five probable fatal cases. Current operational assessment: Ebola Bundibugyo remains active in two countries, while Marburg remains inactive following the closure of the Ethiopia outbreak. This feed should be updated if WHO, CDC, DRC Ministry of Health or Uganda Ministry of Health release newer confirmed figures.
